Toxic masculinity. The Nice Jewish Boy. #MeToo. With high-powered and successful Jewish figures like Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen, and Jeffrey Tambor being indicted in the #MeToo movement, this is a critical moment for Jewish men to reflect on what it truly means to be a mentsch. Jewish masculinity and the Nice Jewish Boy ideal can present a healthy alternative to the violence and brute strength glorified in hegemonic masculinity with values like intellect, kindness and family. At the same time, these archetypes can create significant pressure for external success (wealth, career) and re-enforce harmful gender divisions in the home. This session explores the challenges and opportunities for campers as they grapple with developing a positive sense of identity as Jewish men. The workshop will also provide you with strategies to engage campers in these critical conversations.
